Walpole Island police concerns spark independent review

The Walpole Island Police supervisor has been placed on paid administrative leave while the police service undergoes an independent administrative and operational review.

The review stems from concerns raised about administrative and operational matters within the police service, noted a statement from the Walpole Island First Nation Chief and Council.

Walpole Island leaders said that their priority is the safety and well-being of the community, adding they're committed to ensuring the police service reflects the values, trust, and accountability the community deserves.

"The review will be conducted independently to ensure a fair and impartial process," the statement said. “Chief and Council have a responsibility to ensure that our policing services operate with transparency, accountability, and in the best interests of the community. This decision has been made to protect the integrity of the review process and to maintain public confidence during this period.”

Officials said policing services on Walpole Island will continue during the review and that no further information will be shared regarding the independent review until its conclusion.
