Police investigate fatal Walpole Island crash

Police are investigating a fatal crash at Walpole Island First Nation after a vehicle veered off River Road and entered the St. Clair River.

Members of the Walpole Island Police Service, Lambton OPP, Walpole Island Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, and the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office were called to the scene on Wednesday, July 29, just before 3:30 p.m.

Lambton OPP said the lone occupant, an 84-year-old from Walpole Island First Nation, was pronounced dead at the scene.

River Road was closed between Sands Lane and Chiefs Road for several hours, but reopened to traffic at around 10:20 p.m.

Members of the OPP West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team are helping with the ongoing investigation.

Walpole Island police are asking witnesses or anyone with dash camera footage of the area during the time of the crash to contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be submitted online at sarnialambtoncrimestoppers.org.
