CK police taking part in Operation Impact over Thanksgiving weekend

Chatham-Kent (CK) police will be busy patrolling the roads this long weekend.

Officers will once again be taking part in Operation Impact, a national campaign aimed at making roads safer for everyone.

Staff Sergeant Jason Herder told CK News Today that Thanksgiving was chosen as it tends to have more traffic than other holidays due to university and college students.

"This will be the first weekend where everybody is coming home and reuniting with family," he explained.

Herder added that they won't be targeting students.

Instead, they'll be on the lookout for anyone driving aggressively, distracted, impaired, or without a seatbelt.

"You're going to see that increased visibility when it comes to road safety initiatives," said Herder.

This includes checkpoints and speed traps.

Last year, over 300 tickets were issued across Chatham-Kent. Two drivers were also given three-day licence suspensions for having elevated blood alcohol levels.
