Mastodon sculpture on display in Highgate

A large wooden sculpture of a mastodon is now on display in Highgate.

The art piece is one of many being installed in communities across Chatham-Kent (CK) in an attempt to encourage people to visit the entire municipality.

The mastodon was chosen to represent Highgate as bones from a real mastodon were discovered in the area in 1886. They are currently on display in North Dakota.

CK Mayor Darrin Canniff told CK News Today that he sees this as the centrepiece among all the sculptures.

"When we put our pamphlet out about [all the sculptures], this will be on the front cover," he explained.

The piece was created by Bothwell's Mike Winia, along with Paul Frenette and Jacob Frenette, the father-son duo on HGTV's show 'Carver Kings.'

Winia said the sculpture was one of the biggest the three have ever worked on.

"We've done some taller ones, but not this massive. [It's] at least a couple of tonnes," he added.

The piece took around 200 hours to complete.

Alongside the sculpture is a plaque sharing the history of the mastodon fossil discovered in Highgate.

The piece is impossible to miss when travelling to Highgate as it's located right at the main intersection leading into the community, across from the Mary Webb Centre.
