The Township of Huron-Kinloss says a recent water quality test in Lucknow detected arsenic levels above Ontario's drinking water standard, although follow-up testing showed levels had returned below the limit.
The findings were presented to the township's Committee of the Whole during its November 2, 2026 meeting.
Routine quarterly testing at Well 5 in the Lucknow Drinking Water System detected arsenic at 11.8 micrograms per litre, exceeding the provincial standard of 10 micrograms per litre. The result was reported to provincial health and environmental authorities, as required by Ontario regulations. Subsequent testing recorded an arsenic level of 5.5 micrograms per litre, below the provincial limit.
In its official council highlights, the township states, "No drinking water advisory was issued, and provincial authorities have not required any additional public health measures or operational changes."
The municipality explains that arsenic occurs naturally in groundwater throughout Grey and Bruce counties, making regular testing an important part of drinking water monitoring.
Huron-Kinloss says quarterly arsenic testing will continue to monitor groundwater conditions and identify any future changes. The township says the testing program is intended to ensure water quality concerns are identified and reported in accordance with provincial regulations.
