Two arrested in high-risk traffic stop

Several charges have been laid following a high-risk traffic stop in Sarnia over the weekend.

City police said the investigation started at 2:10 a.m. on Sunday after an 18-year-old Sarnia man allegedly tampered with his ankle bracelet.

Aiden Moffat was also accused of being involved in an assault and theft incident during a dispute at his home. However, police were unable to monitor his whereabouts since the ankle bracelet had been removed.

Officers received a tip at 8:10 a.m. that Moffat was in a U-Haul pickup truck with two other people.

Shortly before 9 a.m., the vehicle was found travelling westbound near London Road and Murphy Road.

The pickup truck was boxed in by police at London Road and Oxford Street.

The driver, 20-year-old Seth Sylvain of Sarnia, allegedly tried to flee the scene and crashed into a police cruiser.

Police said Sylvain then tried to get out of the truck through the passenger side window to avoid arrest. With help from police dog, Shadow, officers removed Sylvain through the driver's side door.

Moffat was also arrested during this time. Police said a third person in the truck was released at the scene unconditionally.

Sarnia police said Moffat and Sylvain were subject to court-imposed conditions during Sunday's encounter.

Moffat was charged with assault, theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, and three counts of failure to comply with a release order.

Sylvain was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a police officer, resisting a police officer, and breach of probation.

The two were held in custody following their bail hearings.

Charges against the accused have not been proven in court.
