Impaired charges laid after crash, police chase

Sarnia police have arrested a 40-year-old city man for impaired driving, after he allegedly fled the scene of a crash on Tuesday.

Police said it happened at London Road and East Street and the driver of the suspect vehicle fled the scene, travelling westbound on London Road, with a flat tire and visible damage to his vehicle.

At the time, the K9 Unit was also heading west on London Road and spotted the suspect approaching from behind at high speeds.

It's alleged the suspect swerved into oncoming traffic, and the officer activated his emergency lights and siren.

Police said the accused failed to stop, and turned southbound onto Mitton Street in the wrong lane.

He jumped the curb, narrowly missing a telephone pole, came to a stop on the roadway. He exited the vehicle and was arrested.

It's alleged empty bottles of alcohol were found in the car.

The suspect allegedly provided breath samples of 217miligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood and 204 mgs of alcohol in 100ml of blood.
