Man arrested in intimate partner violence investigation

A Sarnia man is facing several charges in an intimate partner violence investigation.

Sarnia police said that officers were called for an in-progress assault between a male and his girlfriend early in the morning on March 2. Officers responded within minutes to discover that the male had taken off from the scene.

An investigation found that a dispute had escalated into multiple acts of violence. During the incident, the victim was allegedly assaulted, threatened, and assaulted with a weapon. Investigators report that during the altercation, the male held a knife to the victim’s neck, and attempts were made to force sexual activity without consent.

At the time of these offences, the male was subject to multiple court-imposed conditions, including a prohibition to not contact the victim and for him to reside at a specific address.

The victim sustained minor injuries.

On March 6, officers located the accused at a residence in the city. With Emergency Response Team members, patrol officers, and Police Service Dog Shadow present, the accused was arrested without incident and taken to police headquarters.

A 21-year-old Sarnia man has been charged with two counts of sexual assault, two counts of assault, assault with a weapon, two counts of uttering threats to cause bodily harm or death, and three counts of failure to comply with a release order.

Following his bail hearing, the accused was remanded into custody by the court.

The accused's name is not being released to protect the victim's identity.
