Teams encouraged to sign up for YMCA's Push the Bus event

There's still time for teams of three to six people to sign up for the annual Sarnia-Lambton Push the Bus event on Friday, July 10.

Just as the name suggests, registered teams will push a school bus that's put into neutral at the YMCA Jerry McCaw Family Centre in Sarnia.

"You push it across the parking lot about 60 metres or so, and you try to do it as fast as you can for bragging rights," said General Manager Paul Skuza. "If you win the competition, you get the very coveted golden bus trophy."

Last year, members of the Sarnia Police Service won the trophy.

Each team will be responsible for raising at least $200.

Money raised will support the organization's Fill the Bus campaign to ensure children can have access to summer camp, programs, and services.

"We run a huge camp, one of the bigger camps in the region. However, the cost is not cheap so the Y charity helps subsidize these program fees for kids and families who may not be able to pay the full fee," said Skuza.

The high-energy competition will involve music, food, and about 150 cheering summer camp kids.

With this being the fifth Push the Bus event to take place in Sarnia, Skuza said he's excited about how much it has grown. At first, Skuza said they had a handful of teams and raised approximately $8,000 to $10,000.

"Over the years, we've recruited close to a couple dozen teams to compete and raised tens of thousands of dollars," he said.

Teams can register to participate online, where donations will also be accepted.

"Any donation is welcome. You get a tax receipt for anything over $20," Skuza said. "If you don't want to push and you're a little hesitant, you can still come and make a small donation [and] cheer on the team. We accept cash, debit, and credit. It's really fun!"

The event will start at 12 p.m. and run until 2 p.m.
