Sarnia-Lambton United Way appeals for help to reach halfway mark of $1.5M goal

The Sarnia-Lambton United Way is appealing for donors to help it reach the halfway mark of its fundraising campaign.

Resource Developer Bruce McDonald said to date, around $651,000 has been raised, which is 43 per cent of the $1.5 million goal.

"However, that does put us behind pace this time last year by about $27,000," said McDonald. "We're optimistic internally. We understand that given recent economic events that it was going to be a challenge this year. We still have lots of time and we are making efforts to make that up by being present in the community and just increase transparency."

He said he's seen some hesitancy to donate because of the volatility of the economy this year.

"People feel that their contribution won't matter, and it does," said McDonald. "The things that we provide, the services that we support are also feeling that strain. One in four people use a United Way service, and there is no amount that's too little that can change someone's circumstance or better their life."

The United Way provides funding for 27 local programs offered through 16 agencies across the community including Lambton Elderly Outreach, BGC Sarnia-Lambton and the Salvation Army.

The fundraising effort runs until the end of the year.
