For the second time in two years, Detroit's population grew.
The city's population grew for the first time since 1957 last year, adding 1,852 residents, an increase of 1.1 per cent.
This year, the population was 645,705, up 12,487 from last year's U.S. Census report.
The increase outpaced Michigan's growth of 0.6 per cent, and led all cities in Michigan. Grand Rapids had the next biggest jump in residents, but was still a third of Detroit's gain.
"This record growth would not have been possible without the hard work of longtime Detroiters, our business community, and city employees over the past 12 years," said Mayor Mike Duggan. "Together, we have created a city that is full of opportunity and vibrancy for new and existing Detroiters alike."
The U.S. Census Bureau admitted it undercounted the population last year when it said it grew by 1,852.
The news means Detroit is now the 26th-largest city in the U.S.
