17-year-old cited by OPP for stunt driving

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say many young drivers are still not getting the message about driving within the speed limit.

A patrol officer from the Tecumseh detachment stopped a vehicle on Highway 3 near Malden Road at around 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

The vehicle was clocked at 180 kilometres per hour, 100 km/h above the posted speed limit.

A 17-year-old from Windsor was cited for stunt driving, failure to carry a valid insurance card, and failure to surrender a permit for a motor vehicle.

The G2-licenced driver was also ticketed for having more passengers in the vehicle than seat belts.

The OPP say the law is very clear when it comes to excessive speed.

"It is not only in violation of the Highway Traffic Act, it is also irresponsible and places the safety of your passengers and all other drivers on the road in danger," read a tweet from the OPP. "Not to mention there were more passengers than seatbelts available in the vehicle."

The driver's licence was suspended on the spot, and the vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded.

This was the latest in a series of incidents involving young drivers. On May 13, the OPP cited a 19-year-old on Highway 3 after being clocked going 134 kilometres per hour in an 80 zone.

Windsor police stopped a G2-licenced driver on May 20 for going 130 kilometres per hour near Ouellette Avenue and Eugenie Street, where the speed limit is 60. Three days later, another G2 driver was stopped for going almost double the 50 kilometre per hour limit on Wyandotte Street East.
