Free fishing for Father's Day weekend

Residents can celebrate Father's Day weekend by going fishing for free anywhere within the province.

The Ontario government offers four free fishing opportunities throughout the year for Canadian residents, one of which is on Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15.

"This Father’s Day weekend, take the opportunity to head outdoors, cast a line and create lasting memories with the people who matter most,” said Natural Resources Minister Mike Harris. “Whether it’s your first-time fishing or a time-honoured family tradition, this is a great way to explore Ontario’s beautiful lakes and rivers while supporting the local communities, jobs and businesses that depend on our province’s diverse fishing opportunities.”

The provincial government said licenced anglers spend $1.75 billion on recreational fishing in Ontario each year.

While residents don't need a fishing licence for this weekend, all conservation catch limits and other fishing regulations will still apply. A guide to the rules and regulations can be found on the Ontario government's website.

The next and final free fishing period in Ontario for this year will be during Family Fishing Week, held from June 28 to July 6.
