The University of Windsor is the home of two 3-D models of the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
The models were created as part of the construction process for the new border crossing.
As the project reaches its final stages, the Windsor Detroit Bridge Company donated the models to the university to mark their partnership throughout the project.
"It represents a culmination of a partnership with the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority. They've hired so many of our co-op students, they've been participating in talks with our students, serving on panels, inspiring our students to think big," said Dean Bill Van Heyst, Faculty of Engineering. "When you look at these models, they're not small little Lego models that we're talking about this is a big project."
Over the course of the design, planning, and construction of the bridge and all its ancillary buildings, the Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority has hosted over 220 co-op students. It also employs over 50 alumni from the university.
"It seems really fitting that [the model] so that everybody will see the legacy of the project that's changed the skyline of Windsor and Detroit," said WDBA Chief Capital Officer Grant Hilbers. "All the engineering students will be able to interact with this model and see how it started years and years ago."
The Gordie Howe International Bridge is expected to open later this fall.
