Peche Island summer tours return

One of Windsor's best-kept secrets is ready to show itself off this summer.

The City of Windsor has started its seasonal guided and self-guided tours of Peche Island.

The island, just at the source of the Detroit River, was purchased in 1883 by Hiram Walker for use as a summer retreat. The land was sold in 1907. The City of Windsor then bought the island from the province in 1999.

The Discover Peche Island tour involves a one-hour guided tour so visitors can learn about the island's cultural significance, plus one hour spent on the island.

The guided tours run on Fridays and Saturdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., through October. Tour boats go to and from the Lakeview Park Marina. The cost is $30 per person.

Self-guided excursions are also available to allow visitors to enjoy the island at their own pace. These tours leave the Lakeview Park Marina every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, weather permitting, from 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., with the final trip back to the marina at 2 p.m. The cost is $10.75 per seat.

Visitors are asked to bring photo ID, protection against the sun and bugs, water for hydration, a personal bag such as a purse or backpack, and binoculars.

Tours can be booked by emailing the City of Windsor or by calling (519) 255-1161.
