City urges drivers to embrace the zipper merge

With two major projects underway along the E.C. Row Expressway, the City of Windsor urges drivers to embrace the zipper merge.

That's where drivers use both lanes until the merging point and then alternate lanes to merge.

"Early merging may seem polite, but it can increase backups and risk of collisions," a release said.

"Waiting until the merge point and alternating allows traffic to flow better and saves time," said Commissioner David Simpson.

He says the simple maneuver can reduce backups by up to 40 per cent.

Projects along the E.C. Row at Dougall Avenue and Banwell Road have caused long backups along the expressway this week, so much so that Windsor Police took the rare opportunity to tell drivers to avoid those stretches as much as possible.
