Windsor earns award for business attraction and retention, and environmental stewardship

The City of Windsor has once again earned a place on the CDP Cities A List and an award from the Economic Developers Council of Ontario.

The award from the EDCO was the Award of Excellence in the Business Attraction and Retention category. The announcement was made at the EDCO President's Dinner recently.

Windsor's win recognizes its leadership, collaboration, and execution in landing one of the province's most significant advanced manufacturing investments of the past year, the Minth Group's $300-million electric vehicle manufacturing campus. The effort took 18 months and brought together city departments, Invest WindsorEssex, Invest Ontario, the province, and industry partners.

"This prestigious award reflects what is possible when strong leadership, trusted partnerships, and a shared vision come together," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens. "We are investing responsibly and focusing on the long game as we continue to strengthen our future. This recognition reinforces that Windsor is open for business and ready to compete on the global stage."

The city freed up 54 acres of airport land for advanced industrial use, announced a second facility through a joint venture with AISIN Corporation, and strengthened the city's position as a national leader in energy and advanced manufacturing.

Meanwhile, Windsor joined 120 cities around the world, and seven in Canada, on the CDP Cities A List, a global benchmark recognizing leadership in environmental transparency, climate action, and resilience planning.

The other Canadian cities recognized were Burlington, Calgary, Halifax, Montreal, St. John's, and Vancouver.

To qualify, cities have to disclose a city-wide greenhouse gas emissions inventory, a climate risk and vulnerability assessment, and a published climate action plan.

The city has reported that information to the CDP, a global non-profit that runs the world's only independent environmental disclosure system, since 2016, and has consistently scored an A minus or higher.

It helped more than 24,800 companies and 1,000 cities, states, and regions disclose their environmental impacts last year.
