Leamington rental unit manager fined for fire code violations

Leamington has confirmed that fines have been levied against a local rental unit manager for violations of the Ontario Fire Code.

A routine inspection by Leamington Fire Services has resulted in six citations being issued for failure to install smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, with fines totaling $1,920.

Three citations were issued for failure to install a smoke alarm, and the rest were for failure to install CO detectors.

"Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives," said Fire Chief Don Williamson. "Ensuring that these devices are properly installed and maintained in every level of a home and outside sleeping areas is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect residents from fire and carbon monoxide hazards."

According to recent updates to the Fire Code, there must be working smoke and CO detectors on each level of a home, as well as outside each sleeping area. Landlords and property managers are responsible for the upkeep of these devices.

Fire officials are using this incident to remind all residents to periodically check their CO and smoke alarms and change the batteries as needed.

Complete information about the Ontario Fire Code applicable to Leamington can be found on the fire service's official website.
