Warm days ahead for CK and Windsor-Essex

People living in Chatham-Kent and Windsor-Essex are in for a warm weekend.

Environment Canada is forecasting temperatures of 17 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 18 degrees Celsius on Monday. Sunday will be a bit cooler, with the high peaking around 11 degrees Celsius.

The temperature on each day will be much higher than the average for this time of year, around 4 degrees Celsius.

Trudy Kidd, a meteorologist for Environment Canada, said this warm spell isn't entirely uncommon.

"We often see the battle between winter-like conditions and summer or spring-like conditions," she explained.

What makes this warm spell unique is just how warm it'll be. Kidd noted this will be one of the warmest stretches on record for this time of year, though still well below record highs. March 8, which falls on Sunday, once saw temperatures reach 25 degrees Celsius in 2000.

People hoping these warm temperatures will spell the end of winter-like conditions will be disappointed.

"I think a lot of people will be tempted to put those coats, hats, mitts, and warm layers away, but looking at the latter part of the month, it looks like we have a chance of returning below seasonal temperatures," said Kidd.

The Windsor area sees, on average, around 22 centimetres (CM) of snow each March and roughly five cm in April. Environment Canada doesn't have exact numbers for Chatham-Kent, though Kidd explained that the weather isn't usually too far off from Windsor's.
