After approving a switch to bi-weekly garbage collection at its meeting earlier this month, the Town of Tecumseh has chosen a contractor.
At Tuesday night's meeting, councillors awarded the contract to GFL Environment Inc. at a cost of $884,423. That's more than the town's $760,000 waste disposal budget, but not as much as it would cost the municipality to maintain its current level of service. A previous report to councillors said sticking with weekly garbage pickup would balloon the budget by 263 per cent, compared to 18 per cent.
The contract and the new collection schedule will start on February 1, 2027.
Residential and commercial waste pickup would be every other Thursday, while yard waste collection stays at every Monday, and so-called white goods are picked up monthly. Collection for bulky items would be weekly on Thursdays.
Only one other submission was received for the garbage collection contract, from Miller Waste Systems Inc.
