Province beefs up personnel as wildfire season begins

The Ontario government says it will be ready should the skies become hazy again this summer.

Wildland fire season began on April 1, and the Ministry of Natural Resources has readied support for those who may find themselves on the front lines.

"We are ready to protect communities from wildland fires, with all the necessary resources in place," said Minister Mike Harris. "Our government stands behind the wildland firefighters, pilots, and support staff that make up our frontline response, and we will ensure they have everything they need for the upcoming fire season."

There will be 68 additional permanent staff, along with increased compensation for wildland firefighters, pilots, aircraft maintenance engineers, and support staff.

Both the provincial and federal governments are also investing in initiatives via the Wildfire Resilient Futures Initiative to support training and education.

Additional investments for this wildland season include six new $500-million DeHavilland DHC-515 waterbombers.

The Ministry of Natural Resources said half of all wildfires are started by human carelessness.

To help reduce the risk of fires, the Ministry recommends checking the up-to-date interactive Forest Fire Map and learning about any restrictions in the area you plan to be.

When making campfires, ensure that they do not get too big and that they are completely put out before you leave the area. It's also a good idea to have tools and water on standby.
