Students make 'Dragon's Den' pitches for business start-ups

Eight students got a boost for their start-up businesses after Dragon Den-style pitches at Assumption High School on Friday.

From car detailing and website development to baking and pierogi making, the students developed a business plan and pitched their ideas to their teacher and business professionals.

All eight students received start-up loans from Business Department Head Jeremy Bracken to help with marketing and purchasing.

"As educators, we all put a lot of personal time and money into talented kids in a range of different ways, and I figure funding the ideas of our youth is a good use of my funds," said Bracken.

Grade 9 student Isabella Wang is launching a baking business called Sugar and Smiles. She received a $50 loan to help purchase her first ingredients and equipment.

"Whenever I go to a grocery store or bakery, I always see the same flavours and same desserts, and I want something new, fun, and exciting. That's why I created the business," said Wang.

She plans to sell her baked goods to other students around school.

Jakub Koter, founder of Pinkstar Technology was on hand to hear the student pitches. He sees a bright future ahead for many of the young entrepreneurs.

"They showed some good spirit and that's all that matters, I think, in business, is just showing up and keep showing that spirit," said Koter.
