Unemployment in Windsor falls to 8.1 per cent in April

Even with a decline in Windsor's labour force, the unemployment rate dropped in April.

The April Labour Force Survey was released on Friday morning by Statistics Canada. It showed that the jobless rate in Windsor fell from 8.5 per cent in March to 8.1 per cent in April.

Around 3,700 people in Windsor left the labour force last month. The number of unemployed, however, fell from 22,100 in March to 20,800 in April.

Barrie and London shared the highest jobless rate in Canada, at 9.2 per cent.

The unemployment rate rose in April across the country. Canada's jobless rate went up 0.2 percentage points to 6.9 per cent. The national economy lost a net 18,000 positions, though the national labour force went up slightly to 65 per cent.

In Ontario, the unemployment rate dropped a tenth of a percentage point to 7.5 per cent. The province boasted the highest number of jobs created in April, with 42,000 net positions added.

As winter classes wind down at colleges and universities, more young people are looking for summer work. The survey showed that 14,000 additional people aged 15 to 24 began pounding the pavement. The youth jobless rate rose in Canada by half a percentage point to 14.3 per cent.

The average hourly wage continued to go up in Canada last month. It increased 4.5 per cent, or by $1.64 to $37.77.

The labour force survey for May will be released on Friday, June 5.
