Alzheimer Society plans move to Tecumseh

A new dementia-friendly development is going up in Tecumseh.

Tuesday night, councillors approved a new two-storey, 20,000 sq.ft. headquarters for the Alzheimer Society of Windsor and Essex County immediately north of Tecumseh Arena.

The project will include an adjacent therapeutic garden designed to support those living with dementia.

The town and the Alzheimer's Society say the project will improve access to critical programs and services for the thousands of residents who either live with dementia and their families. It reflects a growing need for dementia-related supports in Windsor and Essex County.

The Alzheimer's Society will fund the construction and operate the facility on town-owned lands under a long-term lease agreement. In return, a significant portion of the space can be used by the municipality on weekends and evenings for recreational programming.

"This project reflects our ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive, healthy, and supportive community spaces," said Mayor Gary McNamara. "By working collaboratively, we can enhance services for residents today, while planning responsibly for the needs of our growing and aging population."

More details about the development will be brought forward to Tecumseh Town Council later this year.
