The Town of LaSalle is hosting a travelling exhibit showcasing Canada's role in Belgium during the First World War.
Fighting in Flanders - Gas. Mud. Memory. is travelling across Canada from the Canadian War Museum and will be at the LaSalle Civic Centre from September 8 to November 14.
"This travelling exhibition offers a meaningful opportunity for residents of all ages to connect with an important chapter in Canadian history," said LaSalle Mayor Crystal Meloche.
The exhibit is a documentation of the Canadian experience in Belgium, presented in a series of four panels. The panels contain photos, personal testimonies, and reproductions of art. It covers the invasion of Belgium in 1914, the Battle of Ypres in 1915, and the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917.
"From the first use of deadly chlorine gas in the Second Battle of Ypres to the treacherous mud of Passchendaele, Canadian soldiers faced horrific new weapons and unimaginable conditions of the battlefield," said Director General of the Canadian War Museum, James Whitham. "This exhibition showcases the Canadian experiences in Belgium, and the impact these had on Canadian lives."
