Coming off a gain of 6,000 jobs in July, Windsor did it again, gaining 6,100 jobs in August as employment in manufacturing grew.
Statistics Canada released its monthly Market Labour Survey on Friday morning showing a slight drop in the city's unemployment rate. It was 7.5 per cent, down one-tenth of a percentage point from the month before.
The local labour force grew by 6,200 people in August, up from 257,700 in July to 263,900. The labour participation rate also increased slightly to 64.3 per cent, an increase from 62.9 per cent.
The national economy lost 42,000 net positions in August, but the loss didn't change Canada's jobless rate. It remained at 6.4 per cent.
Employment fell in business, building, and other support services, public administration, natural resources, and utilities.
For young workers, those younger than 25, employment fell by 19,000 positions, and by 16,000 for core-aged, or workers over 25. The unemployment rate for core-aged men increased to 6 per cent, while it fell to 5 per cent for core-aged women.
Ontario's unemployment rate increased by a tenth of a percentage point to 6.9 per cent.
There were 1.5 million unemployed workers in Canada in August, 24 per cent of whom were still looking for work after 27 weeks. The country's labour participation rate fell one-tenth of a percentage point to 65 per cent.
Despite the trade war, the layoff rate was similar to what it's been for the past 12 months, at 0.8 per cent. Over the previous year, it's been 0.9 per cent.
Statistics Canada surveyed 65,000 households, representing 100,000 respondents, the week of August 9 to August 15.
The next Labour Force Survey is expected on October 9, with the results from September 13 to September 19.
