Windsor city councillors are showing their support to 130 WSIB workers in Windsor whose jobs are being relocated.
Councillor Kieran McKenzie passed a notice of motion to send a formal letter to the WSIB board of directors and the president of the Treasury Board to condemn the centralization of the jobs. He says workers were given the option of taking a severance package or relocating to one of the centres in either London, Mississauga, or Toronto where the jobs were being moved.
"The removal of 131 public sector jobs strips crucial economic stability away from the Windsor community and threatens to cause severe delays in claims management, healthcare referrals and return to work services for local injured workers," said McKenzie.
The letter sent from the council calls for the reversal of the decision.
"The province and WSIB be urged to permanently safeguard remote work arrangements for Windsor employees, recognizing the digital and telephone claims infrastructure allow these vital roles to be executed successfully without forcing workers to abandon their communities," said McKenzie.
The employees were given around three weeks to decide if they would relocate. They would need to report to work in the new locations by December 2026.
