Additional hospital visits extend Windsor-Essex opioid alert

The group of Windsor-Essex agencies monitoring opioid-related overdoses has remained deeply concerned about the number of reported hospital visits.

The Windsor-Essex Community Opioid and Substance Strategy (WECOSS) reported that between October 4 and October 10, 31 suspected opioid overdoses were treated in local emergency rooms, with 17 involving suspected fentanyl.

An opioid alert has been extended. Between September 27 and October 3, WECOSS said there were 30 suspected overdoses, with 17 involving fentanyl.

"Partners involved in the WECOSS...continue to monitor this increase and are working to understand more about these reported cases," read the alert.

The group is overseen by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit. It includes the three hospital systems serving the region, Windsor police, LaSalle police, the OPP, three of the local public school boards, and other agencies.

Symptoms of a potential overdose include slurred or slow speech, being unresponsive, gurgling or snoring noises, small pupils, blue lips or fingernails, or cold, clammy skin.

If something does not feel right, seek medical assistance or call 911 immediately.
