Deer cull to close Rondeau Provincial Park November 22, 23

Rondeau Provincial Park will be closed this weekend for a "deer herd reduction."

The herd reduction will be conducted in partnership with Delaware Nation at Moraviantown First Nation on Saturday and Sunday.

Rondeau Park officials said that access points will be monitored and public entry will be prohibited for safety reasons during the deer herd reduction.

"We ask that you do not enter the park and that you comply with all posted notices," said park officials. "Public safety is the utmost priority for the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and Ontario Parks."

The Rondeau Cottagers Association said that park management has told them that periodic culls are necessary for the good of the forest and to prevent over population, which can lead to the starvation of deer.

"We feel badly for the animals, but accept the necessity," said Rondeau Cottagers Association President David Colby.

Colby noted there have never been any safety issues with the cull nor any property damage issues.

Rondeau Provincial Park will reopen on Monday at 8:30 a.m.
