Chatham-Kent council may be putting its two cents in when it comes to Members of Parliament (MP) crossing the floor.
The motion brought forward at Monday's meeting comes after Marilyn Gladu, the MP for Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong, announced she has joined Mark Carney's Liberal government.
Jubenville is asking council to send a letter showing support to a petition that requests MPs who cross the floor to vacate their seat and trigger a by-election in their riding, while permitting them to sit as an independent without such a requirement.
"I think it doesn't matter what political side you're on. I think it's very important that we uphold democracy and the electorate should be entitled to have their voice with their elected representative, and when that elected representative switches sides, it disenfranchises voters, and it makes them lose faith in our elected representatives, in our parliamentary system," said Jubenville.
When discussing the Liberal Party gaining a majority government, Jubenville explained that the floor crossings contributed to this outcome, rather than the by-election that took place Monday.
"I do think the floor crossers are the ones who handed the Liberal government the majority. I don't think it was the by-elections that did it, it was the floor crossers that did it," Jubenville continued.
The letter calling on the House of Commons to amend the Parliament of Canada Act would be sent to the Office of the Prime Minister, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, and MP Dave Epp.
Jubenville's motion will be voted on at the April 27 meeting.
