One critically hurt in fire at Wingham high school

A student is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a fire at a Wingham high school.

Emergency crews were called about the incident at F.E. Madill Secondary School shortly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

Huron County OPP say the student sustained life-threatening injuries and is in stable but critical condition after being transported by Ornge Air Ambulance to a trauma centre. There were no other reported injuries.

The Avon Maitland District School Board confirmed the school will be closed for the rest of the day and that students have been safely relocated to Maitland River Elementary School.

Parents will be contacted by phone to make arrangements for their child to walk home, be picked up, or taken home by bus.

The board's tragic events response support team is being brought in to assist students who witnessed the incident as they arrived for class.

Following the school evacuation, fire crews assessed the building and cleared the area.

John Street East and Summit Drive surrounding the school have been reopened as Huron OPP along with the West Region Forensic Identification Services have released the scene back to the Avon Maitland District School Board.

Huron County OPP are asking anyone with video footage of the incident not to share it.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information that can assist investigators should call police at 1-888-310-1122 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
