The Yak Shack is back for another season to provide people exploring St. Marys' waterways with a vessel.
Located at Milt Dunnell Field by the Lions Park Pavilion, the free community-driven borrowing program has six single-person kayaks available. New this year, bookings must be made at least a day in advance through ActiveNet at discoverstmarys.ca.
Timeslots are available in two-hour increments and reservations cannot be made more than seven days ahead. Once a reservation has been completed online, keys, paddles and life jackets can be picked up at the St. Marys Public Library at 15 Church Street North. Photo ID has to be shown when checking out a kayak and life jackets are mandatory while on the water.
"Paddlers can explore up to five kilometres of river routes, offering views of St. Marys’ historic downtown, the Sarnia Bridge, and surrounding countryside," the town said in a statement. "Kayaking is recommended for children aged eight and older. Youth under the age of eighteen must be accompanied by an adult."
A new kayak and new life jackets have been donated for the 2026 season by Andrew Hodges, Andrea Macko-Hodges, and James Lapointe, the town added.
