It is back to routine for kids and parents as schools across midwestern Ontario welcome students back on Tuesday.
As is tradition, the day after Labour Day is the first day of classes at the Avon Maitland District School Board, Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board, Bluewater District School Board, Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board Upper Grand District School Board, and Wellington Catholic District School Board.
With school back in session, morning and afternoon commutes will once again be busier with school buses picking up and dropping off, as well as students cycling and walking to and from school.
Police are reminding drivers to slow down and stay alert.
"Failing to stop for a school bus or disobeying crossing guard directions can result in significant fines and penalties. More importantly, these offences place children at unnecessary risk," Grey Bruce OPP said in a statement. "All road users [are encouraged] to work together to create a safe environment for students as the new school year gets underway."
The penalty for passing a school bus when its red lights are flashing and stop arm is extended ranges between $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points for the first offence. Drivers who fail to stop for a school crossing guard face a fine of $365 and 4 demerit points upon conviction.
In an effort to keep students safe, police will increase patrols around school zones and bus stops over the next couple of weeks. Officers will target school bus offences, speeding, pedestrian safety, and compliance with crossing guards.
