Lambton Public Health is committing to focus on mental and physical health in early life as a key priority in its 2025-2029 strategic plan.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Karalyn Dueck identified the pledge as one of four areas of focus in the health unit's four-year plan, during a presentation to Lambton County Council in Wyoming on Wednesday.
"The role of public health in these issues is to work upstream," said Dueck. "Addressing root causes, promoting protective factors, and collaborating with community partners who provide direct services and supports."
Dueck said focusing on mental and physical health in early life is one of the most impactful investments a public health unit can make.
"By promoting healthy starts for children and supporting families, Lambton Public Health can prevent future health challenges, reduce health inequities, and strengthen community resilience," she said. "Together, we build a strong foundation for healthier futures for individuals and the whole community."
Dueck explained how they plan to tackle the promise.
"Lambton Public Health will pursue this goal by conducting and reporting on a community health assessment with youth and families, enhancing services that meet the health needs of children and families from preconception to school entry, and supporting and collaborating with educational settings to promote child and youth mental and physical health," Dueck said.
Other priorities include: strengthening community confidence and engagement in the rise of disinformation, enhancing workforce development and well-being, and improving emergency management.
