Drivers on Egremont Road in Camlachie will soon see an extended community safety zone warning them to slow down, as new signs go up ahead of the school year.
Plympton-Wyoming Councillor Mike Vasey felt installing the signage and lengthening the 50 kilometre per hour speed limit around Errol Village Public School was a no-brainer.
"I'd like to see it go east of Fleming and west of Old Mill Road to include those intersections," Vasey said. "If people roll through the intersection, I think their fines are doubled. It would hurt that much more, where currently right now, the sign's on the other side of the road. So, it would take those two intersections and put them in play."
Councillor Alex Boughen agreed the speed concerns should be addressed immediately.
"I think that one is not going to be controversial, it should be incorporated all the way to Old Mill Road anyways and I don't think there will be any pushback on that specific item," Boughen said. "I agree with councillor Vasey, at least get that passed."
While that safety measure was approved, remaining infrastructure updates proposed were deferred so the school's parent council could weigh in when school resumes.
In his report, Public Works Director Paul daSilva recommended enhancing pedestrian safety with additional pavement markings and visual aids at the existing stop-controlled intersections at King Street and Fleming Road, and upgrading the existing pedestrian crossover at Old Mill Road and Egremont Road to current Ontario Traffic Manual standards.
A proposed sidewalk connection, between the Trails Edge Subdivision and Egremont Road, would be removed from immediate plans and future upgrades would be delayed until additional pedestrian networks are established within the area.
Traffic patterns and pedestrian safety enhancements were investigated after a parent council representative raised several concerns with council.
Meanwhile, council also approved establishing a Community Safety Zone in the vicinity of John Knox Christian School on Confederation Line.
A 60 km/h speed limit will be established through the school area, creating a transition from the existing 80 km/h speed limit to the existing 50 km/h village speed limit.
