Lambton County seeking name for new housing project

The County of Lambton is giving residents the opportunity to pick the name of its newest affordable housing development at 471 Kathleen Avenue in Sarnia.

"We are currently working on the construction of a new 50-unit affordable housing property on Kathleen Ave. So we have recently launched a naming competition to select the building name for that property,” said Manager of Housing Services Melisa Johnson. “We're looking to gather community input on what an appropriate name should be.”

Community members are encouraged to submit naming suggestions that have a connection to the area or historical significance.

“We have no preconceived ideas about the name for the building. I am really interested to see the creative names that come in from the community. One idea that I do have is that the building is located in the Tree Street neighbourhood of Sarnia, so I think it would be a cool idea if we could have something related to that neighbourhood in the name, but really we are open to any and all suggestions," she said.

Construction on the development began in mid-2025; residents are expected to be able to move in this fall.

"We will be housing individuals who are currently on the centralized waitlist for subsidized housing, so we haven't made official offers for those yet, but we are working our way through that list and contacting people who have already applied for that. There are currently over 1,000 people on that wait list, so we will have no problem filling those," said Johnson.

Submissions will be accepted until 12 p.m. on Friday, September 18.

The submission form is available through the County of Lambton website.

Paper copies are available at Lambton Shared Services Centre on Lochiel Street.
