The University of Windsor's athletic community is mourning the sudden passing of one of its own.
The athletic department confirmed via its Facebook page on Wednesday morning that running back Nathan Guizzetti has died.
"Windsor Athletics community is deeply saddened by the passing of Nathan Guizzetti, a valued member of our Lancer football family whose presence will be missed on and off the field," read the post. "Our thoughts are with Nathan’s family, friends, teammates and coaches during this difficult time."
His passing was only described as "unexpected", and the university is not providing additional details.
According to the Lancers' football website, Guizzetti was 19 years old and from Sault Ste. Marie. He attended Korah Collegiate.
Guizzetti's brother, Cole, plays hockey for the OHL's Flint Firebirds.
"You were the best big brother anyone could ever ask for, and you never deserved what happened to you," Cole wrote on his own Instagram account. "I still can’t believe you’re gone, and my heart hurts knowing I have to live without you."
He was in his second year of eligibility with the Lancers and had served primarily as a running back and a punt returner.
Guizzetti appeared in the season opener at McMaster, returning four kicks for 72 yards, and returning seven punts for an additional 84 yards.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Guizzetti's loved ones with funeral expenses. As of Wednesday morning, it had raised over $55,600.
