Detroit Free Press Marathon set for Sunday

An event that has showcased the special relationship between Canada and the U.S. is planned for Sunday, the Detroit Free Press Marathon.

The marathon is one of the few in the world that crosses an international border, not once, but twice.

The race gets underway at 7 a.m. at Fort Street and 3rd Avenue in Detroit.

The course takes runners over the Ambassador Bridge, down Riverside Drive, looping around City Hall Square in Windsor, before travelling back over the border through the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel.

Back on the Detroit side of the border, runners will make their way through historic neighbourhoods, including Woodbridge, Eastern Market, and Dequindre Cut, before ending at the foot of Campus Martius.

Registration for Sunday's race sold out in record time last January. There are 26,000 participants registered for all the events, and 8,000 for the full marathon.

About 2,600 Canadians are taking part in this year's event.

The Detroit Free Press Marathon is a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon.

It's been decades since anyone has broken the course records, but for anyone who does, there's a $500 prize.

The men's record is held by Greg Meyer of Boston, who completed the course in 2:13:07 in 1980. The women's record is held by Elena Orlova of Russia, who completed the race in 2004 in 2:34:16.
