Essex County OPP say two officers suffered minor injuries while responding to crashes on Highway 401 over the weekend.
Officers had their hands full on Sunday as Windsor-Essex was hit by the first measurable snowfall of the season.
"Two officers with the Essex County OPP sustained minor injuries after their patrol vehicle was struck from behind while assisting at one of the scenes," said OPP Constable Steven Duguay in a media release. "The officers had been providing emergency lighting to alert motorists to slow down as multiple collisions were being investigated ahead. Both officers were transported to a local hospital for treatment."
Twenty separate crashes were reported on the 401, with the first one reported shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday, and the last shortly before 9 p.m.
No one was seriously hurt in any of the collisions.
With winter driving upon us, whether we're ready for it or not, the OPP urges caution and a change in mindset when the snow falls.
Drivers are reminded to reduce speed according to conditions, allow extra braking distance, give themselves plenty of extra time to get where they are going, and consider installing winter tires.
The OPP say if you are involved in a crash, stay calm, and call 911 if there are injuries. If not, call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and provide the location of the crash and the number of vehicles involved. Unless it is unsafe, stay in your vehicle until help arrives.
