The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reports early indications are calling for a higher risk of flu activity this year.
A new strain of flu, referred to as H3N2, a type of influenza A, is causing severe illness in young children, older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions.
"When [this strain] was circulating in the Southern Hemisphere it was associated with higher severity, more hospitalizations , more death, this was observed," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mehdi Aloosh.
For maximum effectiveness, Dr. Aloosh is recommending everyone who is able get their flu vaccinations within the next two weeks.
"We have a very short period of opportunity this time, probably next couple of weeks, that people who haven't received their vaccine, get their vaccine because around a month from now we'll get to the height of the season for the flu," said Aloosh.
He also indicated early data from the United Kingdom shows the vaccine is around 40 per cent effective in adults and 70 per cent effective for children.
"Please remember, even if the vaccine is partially helpful it prevents from severe diseases, hospitalizations, ICU, and death," said Dr. Aloosh.
The health unit also recommends people stay home when they're sick, wear a mask in crowded indoor spaces, and regularly clean and disinfect high-touch areas.
