StatsCan reports first increase in US visitors to Canada in months

Canada has reported its first increase in visitors from its southern neighbour since this winter.

According to a report by Statistics Canada released on Monday, approximately 1.8 million Americans made the trip to Canada in October, the most recent month for which data was available. It’s a three per cent increase from October 2024, marking the first time since January that the number of Americans travelling to Canada went up year-over-year.

American residents accounted for 76.8 per cent of all non-Canadian trips to Canada in October, according to Statistics Canada.

Increases were also recorded in October for travellers to Canada outside of the U.S. Visits from overseas residents were up 11.7 per cent from 2024. Visitors from France, the United Kingdom, and China contributed to the strong numbers in October.

The story, however, has not changed for Canadians visiting the U.S., as ongoing trade tension between the Canadian government and the Trump administration simmers.

Statistics Canada reported that Canadians took 2.3 million trips to the U.S. in October, a 26.3 per cent decline from October 2024.
