The Essex Region Conservation Authority has issued an early warning of potential flooding.
The notice comes as a warm and wet weather system is expected to roll into the region on Sunday.
According to the conservation authority, if heavier rain bands form over larger drainage areas, smaller inland creeks and streams may overflow their banks.
Windsor-Essex could be looking at up to 50 millimeters of rain, and the showers are expected to fall steadily over about 13 hours, beginning Sunday morning and tapering off overnight into Monday.
Temperatures are expected to drop quickly on Monday morning. The conservation authority adds that the sudden cool-down raises concerns about ice forming or ice jams developing in smaller streams, especially if water levels rise significantly on Sunday.
They are urging residents to stay cautious around rivers, creeks, and drainage channels. Fast-moving water and slippery banks can be dangerous, and standing water can hide hazards beneath the surface.
Parents are advised to keep children, pets, and livestock well away from both flowing and pooled water.
The conservation says they’ll continue keeping a close eye on weather forecasts and on-the-ground conditions, and will update the advisory if the situation changes.
