The City of Windsor is preparing a comprehensive report to prepare for upgrades to Sandpoint Beach.
The beach was closed last year due to safety concerns. All work on the property has been put on hold while the Lifesaving Society of Canada prepares a report about the safety of the beach.
During a special meeting of council, the city administration was directed to develop a report on the status of the master plan and identify all technical requirements for the project.
"One way we can save taxpayer dollars is to have everything ready, everything that upper levels and senior levels of government who give grant opportunities need, having everything ready so that when that grant window opens, we're ready," said Councillor Angelo Marignani.
In 2025, the Sandpoint Beach Master Plan, which included moving the beach to the east and installing a splash pad on the west of the property, had an estimated cost of $15 million.
"I think the Lifesaving Society of Canada is going to come out with the same report that they came out with last time. Currents did not change, so this really is the answer. We'll have that discussion when it comes to council, and I hope that they see the importance of it, of our waterfront," said Marignani.
The city is also requesting input and financial support from the Port Authority, which owns the property to the west of Sandpoint Beach.
