Judge finds enough evidence to send Tilbury fatal crash case to trial

A Chatham man accused of killing a Tilbury teen in a head-on crash is heading to trial.

Jaise Thomas, 26, was in Chatham court on Thursday to hear that a judge had decided there was enough evidence presented during a lengthy preliminary hearing in January to go to trial.

A date for the trial will be assigned in Chatham court on March 16.

Last month, a defence lawyer argued for charges against Thomas to be discharged because there's not enough evidence to go to trial, citing a momentary lapse of attention, while the prosecution wanted Thomas tried for dangerous driving.

Thomas is charged with dangerous driving causing death in connection with the deadly crash on Queen’s Line between Wheeler Line and Davidson Road, just outside of Tilbury, on January 20, 2025. The collision claimed the life of 18-year-old Sebastian Belliveau.

A publication ban prevents any evidence from the preliminary hearing from being made public.
