BREAKING: Canada settles for silver in Olympic women's hockey

The gold medal game of the Olympic women's hockey tournament turned into another classic between Canada and the U.S.A., but it was the Americans who came out on top 2-1 in OT.

Both teams traded chances in a tense first period that ultimately saw no scoring.

In the second, the Americans carried over a power play opportunity for a hook that sent Ella Shelton to the box, and on a break up ice the other way, Laura Stacey slid a brilliant pass over to Kristin O'Neill, who deked around Aerin Frankel and potted home a shorthanded goal.

Canada got a star performance in the middle frame from veteran goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens, who made a number of big saves to keep the lead at 1-0.

In the third, the U.S. pushed, and Canada survived a number of chances and even earned a power play with just under seven minutes left when Erin Ambrose got hit from behind. However, Canada failed to score, and the Americans pulled their goalie and tied it with just over two minutes left when captain Hilary Knight scored on a tip in front.

The game would need 3-on-3 overtime, and in the extra frame, Megan Keller carved through the Canadian defence and swept in a backhander past Desbiens for the winner for the U.S.A. It marks their third gold medal at the tournament to go with 1998 and 2018.
