Spellers compete at Chrysler Theatre for a chance to compete globally

At the end of Saturday's Eighth Annual WFCU Credit Union Scripps Spelling Bee Regional Final, an elementary student will be headed to Washington, D.C. to compete for the national championships.

This year's local spelling bee will feature elementary school students who have earned their place in the regional final by winning bees at the school level. Students from across Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, and Sarnia-Lambton will compete.

The event is at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts and is sponsored, in part, by the St. Clair College Alumni Association.

In addition to a six-night trip to Washington, the winner will also receive a $200 educational scholarship from the WFCU Centre.

The bee promotes literacy and language arts as part of the WFCU's community engagement program.

This year's pronouncer is Craig Pearson, the managing editor of the Windsor Star, and doors open at the Chrysler Theatre at 1 p.m.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the largest and longest-running educational program in the U.S. and attracts competitors from around the world. It launched in 1925.
