Drivers from Amherstburg, Essex, Windsor and Belle River charged with impaired driving

Essex County is living up to its growing reputation for the highest number of impaired driving charges in the West Region.

Ontario Provincial Police officers in Lakeshore netted four drivers over the weekend, including one who allegedly had alcohol readily available in the vehicle.

A traffic stop on Rourke Line ended with a 54-year-old Amherstburg man charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired and having a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit while driving.

That was just after 9:30 p.m. on Friday.

Just before 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, police responded to a single vehicle crash on County Road 22. During the investigation, officers charged a 23-year-old Essex man again with impaired driving.

Later that evening, a second collision, this one involving two vehicles, brought officers to Puce Road near Oakwood. A 41-year-old Belle River resident was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to surrender an insurance card, failure to surrender a driver's license, having alcohol readily available, and impaired driving.

Police did not say if there were any injuries in those two collisions.

The fourth driver, a 32-year-old Windsor woman, was charged with impaired driving at a traffic stop on Old Tecumseh Road near Vintage Oak Drive. Police made the stop around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Each driver had to surrender their license for 90 days and had their vehicle impounded for a week.
