OPP targets drivers who put the safety of kids at risk

The Ontario Provincial Police in Essex County has embarked on a school bus safety initiative starting on Monday.

Officers will be looking for drivers who ignore flashing lights on school buses.

Drivers are reminded that when a school bus's yellow lights are flashing, the bus is preparing to stop. Traffic in all directions is supposed to stop.

When the lights are flashing red, the bus has stopped.

Not obeying the law can be costly for drivers. The fine ranges from $400 to $2,000, plus six demerit points for a first offence.

Parents are also encouraged to speak with their children about school bus safety.

The initiative wraps up next Monday, March 9.
