Windsor Police warn the public about scammers posing as police officers

Windsor Police have issued a warning for the public after it became aware scammers were posing as police officers hoping to get money and personal information.

The scammers have been using caller I.D. to spoof the Windsor Police phone number, and ask victims to call back. They also use intimidation to try and trick victims into giving their information.

Police say anyone who recieves such a call should remain calm, never share personal information over the phone, and verify the caller. Hang up and call the Windsor Police non-emergency line, 519-258-6111, to verify if it was an actual police officer who called.

Police never demand payment or sensitive information on the phone.

It's also important to report the scam to local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, at 1-888-495-8501.
