Hiatus House is receiving a $11,461 donation from Caesars Windsor Cares to support its transitional housing project.
Hiatus House has been raising money to build that since 2022.
Right now, women escaping intimate partner violence move from six to eight weeks in emergency shelters into the housing market. It can take years to find a home, and the result can be homelessness, a return to abuse, and generational harm to children.
Transitional housing offers those women a safe, stable environment for up to two years.
Sylvie Guenther, the executive director of Hiatus House, said the donation on Wednesday moves the project closer to construction.
"We have been making efforts to provide this next step to women and families since 2022, and we are shovel-ready," she said.
The money is from the Caesars Makes Change program, where guests at the casino can donate their slot tickets into collection boxes in support of a designated non-profit organization.
